How To Handle Common Dental Emergencies

dental emergency services in kanataDental emergencies often occur when you are least expecting them. It’s important that you know what to do and who to call when you experience a dental emergency. As your trusted dentist in Kanata, ON, and Stittsville, ON, we wanted to provide you with some suggestions on how to handle common dental emergencies so that you are prepared when it matters the most. Here are the most common dental emergencies that we see in our office:

Knocked-Out Teeth

When a permanent tooth becomes dislodged, we consider this a knocked-out tooth. If this happens to you, do your best to locate the dislodged tooth. Pick it up by the crown, avoiding touching the tooth roots. Attempt to place the tooth back in its original socket. If you are unable to do so, place it in a glass of milk to keep it moist until you can see a dentist. If your mouth is bleeding, rinse with warm water, and gently place a piece of gauze or a moist cloth in your mouth to stop bleeding and reduce swelling. Then, seek emergency dental treatment immediately. The sooner you see a dentist, the more likely it is that we can reattach your tooth. Restorative dentistry services are also available to help you replace a lost tooth.

Toothache

Sudden or throbbing pain in your tooth is considered a toothache. There are several reasons why you might experience a toothache ranging from tooth decay, infection, and oral abscesses. It’s important that a toothache is evaluated as soon as possible by a professional dentist to determine the underlying cause. To relieve your discomfort, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever or ibuprofen should help. However, do not hold the medication over the affected area as this will only cause further inflammation and discomfort. You should hold a cold compress to your jawbone or cheek to help reduce facial swelling until you can be seen by a dentist.

Losing a filling, crown or other dental restorations

If your crown or filling breaks, or falls out, you should make your way to the dentist’s office as soon as possible. Try to locate the broken piece to bring it with you. Do not attempt to reattach the broken filling or crown by yourself as this can cause further damage or discomfort. In some cases, Dr. Barakat may be able to reattach your restoration. If not, we offer same-day dental restorations with CEREC and work closely with a local lab to restore your smile in a timely manner.
