Top Tips for Dental Health
With so much advice out there, it can be hard to know the best way to care for your teeth. Going to the dentist is always a good choice, but you can’t do that every day. What do you do for the rest of the year? Here are a few tips on how to keep your teeth looking and feeling their best year-round.
Brush Twice a Day
This is an easy tip and one you’ve probably heard again and again from your dentist. Most dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, but if you get the chance try brushing after every meal. When choosing a toothbrush, look for one with soft bristles, and change it about every three months. A traditional or electric brush is up to your personal preference. Make sure to use a toothpaste with fluoride and a seal of approval from the American Dental Association.
After brushing your teeth, it is important to floss at least once a day. Floss can get into nooks and crannies that even the most careful brushing can’t reach. For most people, mouthwash is also a good choice. Look for an alcohol-based fluoride mouthwash to kill bacteria and lessen your risk of decay.
Chew Gum Between Meals
It may seem silly, but chewing gum between meals can actually help clean your teeth! The sticky gum can pull food particles off the surfaces of your teeth, and chewing it also stimulates saliva production. Saliva washes your mouth so that sugars don’t sit on the surface of your teeth. It is no substitute for brushing, of course, but if you can’t brush your teeth after every meal then gum can be a good substitute. Look for a sugar-free gum; xylitol is a popular sweetener that doesn’t cause decay.
Eat the Right Foods
Sugary foods and drinks are some of the leading causes of tooth decay. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t okay occasionally, but you should always brush your teeth after eating something sugary. This can even include some sweet fruits. Apples, even though they are sweet, are an exception. Their crunchy texture can scrape teeth clean, and they are also great for saliva production. Dark leafy greens contain a lot of nutrients that are great for your whole body, as well as your teeth. Dairy products are another great choice – the calcium is vital for keeping your bones healthy and strong.
Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups
One of the most important steps you can take is to schedule professional dental checkups. For most people, we recommend a checkup once every six months. Our trained hygienists and specialized tools can clean teeth better than any home brushing. We can also keep an eye out for any potential dental health problems and treat them as they develop. The best treatment for any condition is to prevent it from occurring in the first place, and this is what we strive to do at your regular appointments.
