Invisalign Vs. Traditional Braces
It used to be that traditional metal braces were the only way that people could get a straighter smile. With advancements in dental and orthodontic technology, that’s no longer the case. Dr. Ami Barakat of Villanova Dental Studio discusses traditional braces and a popular newer alternative, Stittsville, ON Invisalign treatment.
Traditional Braces: What to Know
Traditional braces are still one of the best ways to get a straighter smile. They work by attaching metal brackets to your teeth. Wires are then put through these brackets and they’re slowly tightened over time to move your teeth into place. Elastic ligatures (the small rubber bands) are used to keep the wire in the slot on the bracket.
Depending on the severity of your orthodontic issues, traditional braces may be the only option for you. It’s still the top choice for orthodontic problems that are complex or more severe. You never have to worry about changing out aligners every week or two. Braces are something that is always on your teeth, which can be both a good and a bad thing.
It’s nice to have something that you don’t have to worry about losing. However, traditional braces can make oral hygiene more difficult. They create harder to reach places and you may have to learn new brushing and flossing techniques to make sure you’re cleaning your teeth fully. You also have to adhere to certain dietary requirements to avoid breaking or damaging your braces.
All About Invisalign
Invisalign is a newer orthodontic tool that’s used to straightening teeth. Invisalign uses multiple sets of clear aligners that are made from digital impressions of your teeth. You change them about every two weeks to slowly move your teeth into place. The aligners are removable, but you do have to make sure you’re wearing them for about 20-22 hours each day.
Invisalign is a popular choice because they’re much more discreet than traditional braces. The clear aligners are barely noticeable when you’re wearing them. The aligners are made of a comfortable, flexible plastic that’s nicer to wear. Traditional braces have metal brackets and wires that can irritate your soft tissue.
Invisalign is also ideal because the aligners are removable. If you’re a responsible person who can keep track of your aligners, it’s the treatment for you. You don’t have to make any dietary changes because you can take the aligners out to eat. Hygiene is easier because you’ll just be brushing your normal teeth, and washing out the aligners. You don’t have to worry about small, harder to reach places because of orthodontic devices.
Usually, Invisalign requires a shorter treatment time than traditional braces. This is especially true because it’s mainly for treating mild to moderate orthodontic concerns. The wire and bracket form of traditional braces takes longer to move your teeth into place. Though Invisalign is mainly for adults, Invisalign teen is available for teenagers that are ready to take on the responsibility.
